49er Free Agent Frenzy

The 49ers have made some big moves to open the free agency period this year. In years past, the organization focused building the team through the draft rather than free agency. With the taste of last years success, the organization is showing that they are willing to make a big splash (even entering the Peyton Manning sweepstakes) in order to put the team over the top. Although they were not able to land Manning, the Niners have landed a couple of big names.

Defense:  All 11 starters from last year have been signed and will return for another season. This is great news for a team who boasted a top defense in the league and the number one rush defense. Included transactions are re-signing CB Carlos Rodgers to a four year contract, placing the franchise tag on S Dashon Goldson, and signing CB Perrish Cox to a two-year contract.

Offense: With the tight-end, running-back,and offensive line squared away for the future, the 49ers focus on filling their most glaring weakness wide receiver.  Bringing Randy Moss out of retirement for a one-year deal and signing Mario Manningham to a two-year contract. Signing Moss maybe a risky move because it is unknown whether he will be the big threat he could be or guy who was on 3 different team in his final year in the league. His contract is not guaranteed so the risk is less severe. Manningham brings Super Bowl experience and depth to a growing team.

The QB position is still in the air with Peyton Manning joining the Broncos, but Alex Smith is expected to return to the team. 49ers Spin will keep you up to date with that on going situation.
