Vernon Davis: "Randy Moss looks like the guy I used to watch"

"Before he ever got to the NFL, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was a Randy Moss fan. Now Davis is a Randy Moss teammate, and he says the guy he sees on the field at Organized Team Activities shows off all the same athletic talent as the guy he watched — and tried to emulate — while he was developing as a football player.
Davis told Trey Wingo on ESPN that he’s seen Moss make the same kinds of jaw-dropping plays on the 49ers’ practice field that he used to make when he was in his prime.
“Randy caught a pass the other day, I mean — man, come on,” Davis said. “He caught a pass, there were three guys on him in practice, and he went up with two hands, and he looked like the old Randy Moss that I used to watch when I was in high school and college.”
Moss didn’t play at all last year and wasn’t any good the year before that, but if he’s even close to the player he was during his best seasons with the Vikings and Patriots, then Davis will have a teammate who can transform the 49ers’ passing game."

Patrick Willis Joins Smith/Newton Situation

Alex Smith used Cam Newton as an example that stats don't always guarantee wins. This caused Carolina Panther linebacker Jon Beason to retaliate and come to the aid of Newton.

Well a 49ers linebacker has now joined the conversation. Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis went to Twitter to back Smith. Willis said he backs Smith, his comments, and all of his teammates.

Carolina Panthers LB Jon Beason Fires Back At Alex Smith

It seems the guys over there at Panthers camp got wind of Alex Smith's comments about Cam Newton. One player, Jon Beason, went to twitter to protect his quarterback and his team. At the same time he threw a shot back Smith's way...

Alex Smith Calls Out Cam Newton

Well it seems the quarterback that Mike Singletary once labeled "meek" might have grown a pair. When asked about the 49ers passing offense for the upcoming season, Alex Smith replied with what could be looked at as a shot at Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers as a whole.

Smith was asked if he thought the new influx of wide recievers would help the 49ers passing numbers and he replied,
“I could absolutely care less on yards per game. I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.”
By the numbers,  the 49ers averaged 181 passing yards a game last season, ranked 29th in the league, but finished 13-3 and went to the NFC Championship game. Newton's Panthers, meanwhile, averaged 239 yards a game, ranked 13th overall and finished 6-10. Newton had three, 300-plus yard games. Smith's highest regular season total was 291 yards in a comeback effort against the Eagles. He had 299 yards against the Saints in the playoffs.

Two More 49ers Revealed on NFL's "Top 100 Players of 2012"

Two more 49ers have been revealed on the NFL Network's "Top 100 Players of 2012" list. They will join fellow 49er, Navarro Bowman, who already checked in on the list at number 85.

Coming in at number 69 is Carlos Rogers. Rogers had a breakout season in his first year of duty will the 49ers. He picked off 6 interceptions(only had 8 INT before the season) recorded 43 tackles and even scored a touchdown.

Just two spots in front of Rodger, at number 67, comes Joe Staley. Staley anchored an offensive line that protected Alex Smith well all year, helping him not miss a snap due to injury.

Congratulations to Carlos Rodgers and Joe Staley for earning this accolade voted on by their peers.

49ers Draft Pick Tears Ligament in Knee

The San Fransisco 49ers' 5th-round draft pick from Notre Dame, linebacker Darius Fleming, tore the ACL in his left knee during last weekend's rookie minicamp.

The 49ers had no comment on the situation; except to confirm that it was indeed an ACL tear,

This injury will most likely cost Fleming his rookie season. He was expected to compete for the fourth spot at outside linebacker with seventh-round pick Cam Johnson out of Virginia.

A.J. Jenkins Noticeably Out of Shape at First Day Of Mini-camp

Many sources are reporting that A.J. Jenkins first day in a 49ers uniform was not a good one. He was clearly out of shape and often winded.

Halfway through the morning’s 90-minute practice, the receivers broke into a balance and speed race, known as the figure-eight drill. Jenkins lost at least two races, the first just slightly, to undrafted rookie Chris Owusu of Stanford. Jenkins never recovered, dropping two passes and looking sluggish the rest of the way.

Jenkins had bags of ice wrapped around his thighs and hamstrings, standard training camp treatment, after his first practice. He also had to be spelled out to rest during some of the drills.
“I’ve got to step my game up a little bit,” said Jenkins, adding that his hectic schedule before and after the draft(taking his finals and graduating from college) broke his workout routine. “I’ve got to get in shape. But as far as everything else, I think I did pretty good. I knew what I had to do, knew all my assignments, I think I did pretty good.”
The press weren't the only ones to notice either. Coach Harbaugh also took notice. Though, when asked about it, Harbaugh pointed out that most of the guys were out of shape.
“Out of shape, that’s the bad news,” Harbaugh said of his new bunch. “Good news is that it’s a very talented group of those young receivers. You could tell that right away. But the bad news is we’ve got to get them in shape. I don’t know exactly what all these guys have been doing in the last six months.”
“I knew that these guys weren’t working out as hard as our guys have been working out,” Harbaugh said. “Because our guys are just fanatical with the way they work out and the way they approach their cardio. So I knew it wasn’t going to be as good as our guys. But, yeah, we have a ways to go."
Right now A.J. Jenkins and the rest of the rookies have a ways to go to reach the 49er standards that are now expected.

49ers Sign Six Draft Picks

The 49ers are working fast at the negotiation table. According to Matt Barrows, the 49ers have completed deals with six of their seven draft picks. The only exception is A.J. Jenkins, who has yet to sign his contract.

LaMicheal James, Joe Loony, Darius Fleming, Trenton Robinson, Jason Slowey, and Cam Johnson have all sign 4-year deals.

Today was the first day of rookie mini-camp, a luxury Coach Jim Harbaugh didn't enjoy do to the lock-out last year.

49er Players Thoughts on Randy Moss and "Football School"

49ers First rounder Jenkins Will Attend Rookie Minicamp

When he was drafted, A.J. Jenkins stressed to reporters how important his education is to him and his family. He made it clear he plans to graduate from the University of Illinois this weekend. This is in conflict with the opening of 49ers rookie minicamp. Well it now looks as if his plans have changed a little.

Jenkins will still be graduating with a degree in sports management but he wont be attending the graduation ceremony with his classmates. He, instead, will be joining 24 other rookies for a three day initiation camp. All of the 49ers rookies, including the undrafted ones, are expected to be in attendance.

"He's been working out non-stop and is ready to go," said his agent Jonathan Perzley. "He's not OK with just sitting and watching everyone else during his rookie season. He wants to get in there and play."

Jerry Rice reaches out to A.J. Jenkins

The wide receiver taken by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the NFL draft is going to get whipped into shape by the former 49ers receiver who is regarded by many as the greatest player in NFL history.
A.J. Jenkins, the former Illinois receiver who was selected by the 49ers in this year’s NFL draft, has been trading messages on Twitter with Jerry Rice, the Hall of Famer who was the 49ers’ first-round draft pick in 1985 and was ranked No. 1 in NFL Network’s list of the 100 greatest players ever. Rice confirmed today on ESPN’s NFL Live that he plans to take Jenkins to “the hill,” the 2.5-mile uphill path he regularly ran during his NFL career. Rice said that if Jenkins can master the hill, he’ll be at his best in the fourth quarter when everyone else is spent.
“In the fourth quarter you’ve still got to be able to make plays, make that incredible catch to win that football game, so I want to introduce him to that hill,” Rice said of Jenkins. “Hopefully we can build a relationship where we can start working together.”
The 49ers will never have another Jerry Rice, but if Jenkins takes his offseason conditioning as seriously as Jerry Rice, he’ll have a very successful career in San Francisco.

49ers CB Perrish Cox Facing Civil Lawsuit for Sexual Assualt

Perrish Cox, the 49ers' newest cornerback, who was signed on a two-year deal this offseason after leaving the Broncos, has been charged in a civil law suit for sexual assault charges. Cox was acquitted of felony charges stemming from what allegedly happened in 2010, but his accuser continues to pursue him for financial compensation.
Here is a statement from the 25-year-old cornerback released on him back at the time of his signing:
"That's not me," Cox said of the charges at the time. "I'm not that type of guy. ... It was a nervous, scary situation. But I don't blame anybody but myself. I take responsibility for my actions. I'll never put myself in that situation again."
The 49ers believe that as well. "As an organization, from ownership on down, we have done our due diligence and are confident that Perrish will be a positive contributor to the 49ers, as well as our community," general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement at the time.
Cox no longer has to deal with the criminal charges pressed against him, but the civil suit could take some time to settle in court. This could become a distraction off the field. The 49ers can only hope the situation is settled quickly so they can get the very most out of their new cornerback.

Two Rookies Have Selected Their Jersey Numbers

The first and second round picks have chose their jersey numbers. A.J. Jenkins will wear No. 17 and LaMichael James announced he will wear No. 23 after donning No. 21(which obviously is already taken) at Oregon. One Twitter follower suggested he be called, "King James" because of his numerical selection.

Randy Moss Reports for Offseason Workouts

Randy Moss arrived at the off-season work-outs on April 30. Before signing his contract Moss and the team agreed that that was the day he was going to report. After catching passes with the other receivers, Moss told the teams website,
"It was eye opening. Today was the first day, and we were moving so fast. Today felt like we'd been out here a week or two."
This means that all the 49ers are present at the workouts except for Frank Gore, who does his workout in his hometown Miami, and Dashon Goldson, who has not signed his franchise tender.
