Ted Ginn Jr. Injures Ankle in Broncos Game

After finishing the 2011 season on the sideline, it's possible 49ers wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. will begin 2012 in the same spot.

Ginn limped off the field after he was tackled around the right ankle by Broncos linebacker Steven Johnson on a 9-yard reverse in the third quarter of San Francisco's 29-24 preseason win Sunday.

Ginn was taken to the locker room, and X-rays were negative, head coach Jim Harbaugh said. Ginn missed the final two games of the 2011 regular season with a sprained ankle. He then returned for the NFC divisional playoffs, but sustained a knee injury that kept him out of offseason workouts.

If Ginn isn't ready for Week 1 against the Packers, Kyle Williams probably will handle punt-return duties. Williams had two fumbled punts in the NFC Championship Game, but has bounced back with a solid preseason performance.

Williams has averaged 11.6 yards on five punt returns, has a team-high 71 receiving yards and shares team-high honors with five catches. On Sunday, he had a 46-yard catch-and-run on a hitch-route pass from Colin Kaepernick.

Williams "played very well," Harbaugh said. "He played very good in the return game. He played good on the offensive side of the ball."
