Ginn, Jacobs unlikely to play against Lions

Ted Ginn and Brandon Jacobs were not on hand for the start of 49ers practice, making them very unlikely to play Sunday against the Lions. Ginn (ankle) went through warmups with his teammates, and he appears close to returning to the lineup. When practice began, however, he went off to a side field to work with trainers.

Jacobs (knee) also was seen working out on a side field on Wednesday. He has not been on hand - for the start of practice, at least - the last two days.

Ginn's absence means Kyle Williams would make his 2012 Candlestick Park debut as the 49ers punt returner. Williams had a solid game against the Packers, returning one punt 20 yards, fair catching three others and letting two bounce.

Ginn and Jacobs were two of the 49ers' inactive players against Green Bay. The others were quarterback Scott Tolzien, running back LaMichael James, tight end Garrett Celek, guard Joe Looney and defensive end Ian Williams.

Aldon Smith was not fined by the NFL for removing his helmet, something for which he received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Sunday. Smith on Thursday insisted the helmet already was coming off after it flipped up by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' heel as the two were going to the ground.

Neither C.J. Spillman nor Packers linebacker Clay Matthews were fined for illegal hits they were penalized for in the game.
