Justin Smith reacts to Kevin Gilbride’s comment

49ers defensive end Justin Smith, the subject of the mini-controversy that brewed this Friday morning, seemed bemused about the situation.

Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride told New York media that Smith “gets away with murder” by holding offensive linemen. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh then issued a statement calling Gilbride’s comments “irrational” and “outrageous” and said Gilbride’s analogy was “absurb.”

Smith seemed slightly confused and bemused by the controversy. “I really don’t know what he’s talking about,” Smith said. “But whatever, it doesn’t bother me.”

On the subject of whether he holds offensive linemen, Smith said, “They hold me. That’s the first I’ve heard it. Interesting.”

Talking about offensive line in general, Smith’s characteristic humor came out. “They just hold; they’re born that way.”

While Smith was amused, Harbaugh was mum.

“It’s been addressed,” Harbaugh said after Friday’s practice. “I moved on about two hours ago.”

In the locker room, guard Alex Boone suggested Gilbride broke an unwritten rule. “I think it’s wrong to call out a player like that,” Boone said. “A lot of people can be called out for a lot of things. We just don’t do it. It’s not the way football is played.”
