Alex Smith’s mom says leaving SF is “bittersweet”

Since Alex Smith can’t officially become a Chief for nearly two weeks, we can’t know for sure how he feels about things.

But according to a source close to the former 49ers quarterback — his mother — the move is not going to be without emotions.

“It was bittersweet,” Pam Smith told Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star of her son’s losing a job, and then having to move. “It was hard. Alex had worked long and hard and been through a lot of coaching turnover, and a lot of issues, . . . injuries. It seems like things were really clicking, and he was playing at an exceptional high level. It was hard.”

Pam Smith still attends all her son’s games, though the commute from her home in San Diego to mid-America will be a bit longer.

She thought the Chiefs were a good fit for her son.

“You’re going to get a smart, very hard-working, very high-character person,” she said, “and by any measure, one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet.”
