Nate Montana (son of Joe) will try out for 49ers

Duron Carter won’t be the only son of a Pro Football Hall of Famer trying out for a spot his dad’s old team in the coming weeks.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that quarterback Nate Montana will try out for the 49ers at their rookie minicamp May 10-12 in hopes of earning a roster spot on the team that won four Super Bowls with his father Joe under center. Montana tried to follow in his father’s footsteps at Notre Dame, but that didn’t work out all that well and Montana bounced through three different schools during his college career.

Report: 49ers ready to move into middle of first round

So far in the pre-draft chatter process, there have been a lot of teams willing to concede a few spots. Few have said they want to move up.

But according to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, the 49ers could be interested in moving up to the 13th or 14th pick.

That’s a fairly specific location, but the 49ers are a team with a few specific needs, 13 picks to try to fill them, and the kind of roster that doesn’t have room for that many drafted rookies.

Schedule could be a little tricky for the 49ers

The NFL gave the 49ers a schedule with a few quirks. It is nothing they can’t handle, and they are quite capable of handling it with the sort of ease that makes them clear Super Bowl favorites when the calendar hits January.

Nevertheless, they have the sort of schedule that could cause them an uneasy moment or two.

49ers haven’t closed door on Charles Woodson

Charles Woodson hasn’t generated the kind of interest on the open market that he hoped to see when the Packers released him earlier this offseason.

There’s been just one visit for Woodson, but the good news is that the team he visited with hasn’t closed the door on signing him. The 49ers signed Craig Dahl earlier in the offseason to go with Trenton Robinson and C.J. Spillman, but have hardly squared away who will be lining up with Donte Whitner at safety next season.

Early talks commence between 49ers and Iupati

Having a quality starting quarterback on a cheap rookie contract that can’t be renegotiated for another year gives a team a certain financial flexibility.

And now that the 49ers have already locked up right tackle Anthony Davis, they’re moving down the line.

Albert Breer of the NFL Network mentioned that the 49ers have begun preliminary contract talks with guard Mike Iupati.

Anthony Davis celebrates his contract by taking a shot at Schiano

When 49ers offensive tackle Anthony Davis played at Rutgers, his coach was current Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano. The two of them didn’t always see eye to eye. And so today when Davis signed a five-year, $37.3 million contract extension with the 49ers, he decided to take a little shot at Schiano to celebrate.

In a tweet that he later deleted, Davis wrote about a conversation he once had with Schiano, in which Schiano had told Davis that Davis wouldn’t last in the NFL, beyond his rookie contract.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the 49ers obtained McCoy and the Browns sixth-round pick in exchange for their fifth- and seventh-round picks, which Florio has also confirmed.

So that’s the 164th overall pick and the 237th in exchange for the 173rd and a warm body, so they moved down nine spots and threw in a seventh to get a guy to back up Colin Kaepernick.
