Quinton Patton got the Tavon Austin treatment

So, what does that mean exactly? If you recall, Tavon Austin said recently that since being drafted, he’s been approached by several friends and distant “relatives,” all with their hands out asking for money. Well, count 49ers rookie Quinton Patton as a member of that club.

“People come out of the woodwork when they hear something good has happened to you,” Patton told at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere event in Los Angeles. “When I got drafted, there was a 30 minutes to an hour span that I couldn’t use my phone.
“Just because some people want to jump on board.”

Some people. But not everyone.

“The people that have been here through thick and thin, that’s the people that wait a few days and then they call you. They know that everybody is going to call you [at the beginning]. I got the same treatment as Tavon Austin.”

Besides that, everything is golden for the spirited Patton. If you remember, he was the player who paid for own ticket and hopped on a flight to San Francisco right after being drafted. He had to be turned away at the last minute when the team reminded him of the rule stating that rookie can’t report to team headquarters until minicamp.

He earned some nice brownie points from head coach Jim Harbaugh, who said he intended to go up to Patton at rookie minicamp and give him a hug. So … did Patton get that hug? No dice.

“Haven’t got that hug yet. I gotta make a couple plays to get that hug,” Patton laughed.

He’s already met his quarterback, too. Colin Kaepernick, the man who really seems to be pumping a lot of iron lately.

So, Quinton … do you think Kaepernick is getting a bit too big?

“Hey, that’s my quarterback, it’s my quarterback,” Patton said while laughing. “I gotta go up and get strong with him.”

Well played, Mr. Patton.
