49ers add special-teamer / safety Ray Ventrone

The 49ers, in a move that bolsters their special teams coverage, have signed veteran safety Ray Ventrone. The move was announced by the club on Monday.

Ventrone, 30, has appeared in 73 NFL games, notching 50 tackles on defense. He has also recorded 39 special teams stops, according to the Niners.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Ventrone has played the last four seasons with Cleveland after stints with the Patriots from 2005-2009 and the Jets (2007).

The 49ers’ special teams coordinator, Brad Seely, coached Ventrone in New England and Cleveland. Also, new 49ers consultant Eric Mangini is familiar with Ventrone from his stints with the Patriots, Jets and Browns.
In a corresponding roster move, the 49ers waived undrafted rookie fullback Jason Schepler on Monday.
