49ers sign Eric Wright

At long last, cornerback Eric Wright has officially become a member of the 49ers.

Wright looked like he was headed to San Francisco last month when the 49ers agreed to a trade with the Buccaneers for Wright in exchange for a conditional draft pick, but the Niners failed him on his physical and Wright wound up getting cut in Tampa. Now, after Chris Culliver tore his ACL, the 49ers have circled back and signed Wright to a one-year deal. The team also announced that Wright was placed on the non-football injury list upon signing.

“We are pleased to welcome Eric to the 49ers organization and look forward to his contributions,” General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement from the team. “Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible.”

The writing for this move started going on the wall even before the Niners lost Culliver as Baalke said that Wright joining the team remained a possibility shortly after the 49ers rescinded the trade. Things heated up once Culliver went down and now Wright is a 49er.

He’ll join Tramaine Brock, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Perrish Cox in a competition for playing time behind Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown. They waived cornerback Lowell Rose, who was waived the first time it looked like Wright was coming to town and then re-signed, to make room for Wright on the roster.
