Colt McCoy to have MRI on neck/shoulder

Colt McCoy will have an MRI after leaving the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason opener against the Denver Broncos late in the first half.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, McCoy described the injury as a stinger in his right neck and shoulder. He sustained the injury when rushing for a 1-yard loss late in the second quarter. He remained in the game for three more plays before being intercepted by Mike Adams on a pass intended for A.J. Jenkins.

McCoy didn’t believe the injury was serious and characterized the MRI as precautionary. He said it wasn’t close to the severity of the shoulder injury he suffered when playing in the BCS Championship game for Texas against Alabama in 2010.

“These things are always different when you’re dealing with nerves and stingers and stuff,” McCoy said. “You never know.”

McCoy was 3 of 7 for 41 yards and an interception in limited duty. He’s battling Scott Tolzien for the 49ers backup quarterback job.
