Greg Roman: Vernon Davis has “taken it up to a new level”

When the 49ers are at full strength offensively, tight end Vernon Davis is an important part of their success.

With serious questions at wide receiver thanks to injuries keeping Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams off the field and the continued struggles of 2012 first-round pick A.J. Jenkins, Davis is even more important. The team recognizes that, as evidenced by the variety of ways they are exploring to use Davis this season. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman likes what he’s seen.

Madden didn’t understand why Kaepernick wasn’t more highly rated in 2011 draft

During the 2010 college football season, former NFL coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden tripped over plenty of Nevada games on TV.  And Madden was impressed by the team’s quarterback, Colin Kaepernick.

“When I watched him, he had a strong arm,” Madden tells Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.

”You knew that.  There’s a thing where a guy doesn’t have a strong arm, or the guy’s too small, or he can’t run — Kaepernick could do all those things.”

A.J. Jenkins still struggling at 49ers camp

San Francisco receiver A.J. Jenkins was perhaps the most disappointing first-round pick in the NFL last year, appearing in just three games and failing to catch a single pass. This year, with receiver Michael Crabtree out with a torn Achilles tendon, the 49ers would love to see Jenkins play like a first-round pick.

So far, no such luck: Jenkins has not distinguished himself in practices, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports.

Kaepernick says he’s faster after working with Olympians

Colin Kaepernick is already the owner of the NFL record for most rushing yards in a game for a quarterback, but he believes he’s even faster right now than he was when he torched the Packers for 181 rushing yards in January.

Peter King of TheMMQB.com reports that Kaepernick thinks he has significantly improved his speed while working with a crew of track and field athletes that includes Dwight Phillips, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump.

Vernon Davis still working with wideouts, will do whatever 49ers ask

During the 49ers’ mandatory minicamp this offseason, Vernon Davis worked with the team’s wide receivers rather than at his usual spot as the team’s tight end.

Davis isn’t “exclusively” working with wideouts during training camp, as he reportedly did at minicamp, but he’s seeing time there as the 49ers continue to formulate offensive plans for the season. Davis said he’s happy to do anything the 49ers want him to do as he doesn’t “play for the Pro Bowl” and thinks the receiver work will benefit him any way that the team ultimately decides to deploy him.

Harbaugh impressed with Lawrence Okoye so far

The 49ers were expecting to have to teach and develop rookie defensive end Lawrence Okoye.

So when the former English Olympic discus thrower put on pads for the first time this offseason, no one expected him to look natural.

But 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said he’s been impressed with how Okoye has looked so far in training camp.

49ers take different approach to preparing for the read-option

With the proliferation of young, mobile quarterbacks who run the read-option, teams now have some interest in having quarterbacks on the roster who can run the formation for the scout team.

As explained by Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers have a different plan for preparing to face Russell Wilson twice, Jake Locker, Cam Newton, and Robert Griffin III.

They’ll use their first-team offense against their first-team defense more extensively this season.

Harbaugh says team didn’t know about Tarell Brown workout clause

49ers cornerback Tarell Brown opted not to participate in the team’s voluntary offseason program.  He didn’t know that his decision resulted in the loss of $2 million in 2013 base salary.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, coach Jim Harbaugh said Sunday that the team didn’t know, either, until after Brown’s ability to preserve the $2 million had been lost.

Tarell Brown says he’s fired agent after losing $2 million salary increase

49ers cornerback Tarell Brown indicated Thursday that he has fired agent Brian Overstreet after losing a $2 million salary bump for 2013 by not taking part in the club’s offseason workouts.

“That’s what agents get paid to do — to orchestrate the contract and let you know what you can and can’t do as far as workouts, OTAs, things of that sort,” Brown said Thursday of Overstreet, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that. So, in my opinion, you have to be let go. We all are held accountable for our actions and it’s just part of the business.”

Tarell Brown blows $2 million by not showing up for offseason program

The decision of Jets quarterback Geno Smith to push nearly $700,000 in base salary to workout bonuses for 2015 and 2016 sparked a back-and-forth regarding whether more players should do it.

One player who would advise against it is 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown.

Marcus Lattimore thinks he could practice right now

The San Francisco 49ers are taking it slow with rookie running back Marcus Lattimore, who is recovering from a serious knee injury. But Lattimore thinks he’s good to go now.

Lattimore told Yahoo! Sports that his recovery from a knee injury that he initially feared would be career-ending has been nothing short of miraculous. And Lattimore believes that he could be on the practice field today if the 49ers would let him.

49ers bring back Lowell Rose

After the draft, the 49ers signed cornerback Lowell Rose, who was not selected by any team.  The Niners kept him through the offseason program, cutting him on July 19.

Coincidentally, the 49ers struck a deal with the Bucs for cornerback Eric Wright on July 19.

On Monday, the 49ers backed out of the deal, citing a failed physical.  Coincidentally, the Niners have brought back Lowell Rose.  The team announced the transaction on Tuesday.

Kaepernick says he heard the Packers turning on each other

As 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick ran for an NFL-record 181 yards in the divisional playoff win over the Packers, he heard a sound that was music to his ears: Players on Green Bay’s defense getting on each other’s cases about why no one could stop him.

In a long profile by Peter King of TheMMQB.com, Kaepernick reveals that during that game, the Packers’ defenders began yelling at each other about why nothing was working against the 49ers’ offense.

49ers place Michael Crabtree on PUP list

The 49ers have long contended that wide receiver Michael Crabtree will return to help them this season, but they have a pretty good idea that he’ll miss at least the first six weeks of the year.

Crabtree tore his Achilles during the offseason and coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that the team will place him on the active PUP list to start camp. Harbaugh also said that the 49ers “feel very good about where he is right now” in his rehab and Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com gave no indication that they’ve stopped feeling Crabtree can contribute to the team at some point this season.

Eric Wright fails 49ers physical, cut by Bucs

The strange tale of cornerback Eric Wright has taken another turn.

News that Wright was traded by the Buccaneers to the 49ers for a conditional draft pick broke on Friday just before we also learned that Wright had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor DUI earlier in July.

Niners’ acquisition of Wright underscores importance of cornerbacks

The 49ers gave Eric Wright his latest second chance for the same reason the Bucs gave him so many.  Wright plays cornerback, a position of increasing importance as the run-pass pendulum swings more and more toward seven-on-seven in pads.

49ers place four players apiece on active-PUP, active-NFI lists

The 49ers have placed running back Kendall Hunter, wide receivers Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams and linebacker Darius Fleming on the active-PUP list, the club said Saturday.

Also, the club said it has put running back Marcus Lattimore, defensive tackle Tank Carradine, defensive tackle Quinton Dial and offensive tackle Luke Marquardt on the active/non-football injury list.

With the exceptions of Hunter, Dial (toe) and Marquardt, the players listed are all on the mend from knee injuries. All eight players count against the 49ers’ roster limit of 90. They can remain on these lists until the 49ers make their final roster cuts, the club said.

Kaepernick jersey becomes top seller in NFL

The jersey worn by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has become the hottest seller for the NFL.

According to CNBC.com, Kaepernick has climbed to the top of the chart for the period covering April 1, 2013 through June 30, 2013.

Did the Niners know about Eric Wright’s recent arrest?

The 49ers once again have a defensive back named Eric Wright.  But in the wake of the move that sent the well-traveled second-round pick (who also has played for the Browns and Lions) from

Tampa to San Francisco, an intriguing question has emerged.

Did the 49ers know Wright had been arrested on July 12 for suspicion of DUI?

Bucs trade CB Eric Wright to 49ers

If the world wants to find out whether cornerback Eric Wright is the exceptional player he says he is, they’ll need to watch 49ers games this season.

The Buccaneers announced Friday afternoon that they have traded Wright to the 49ers in exchange for a conditional 2014 draft pick. The trade comes at the tail end of an offseason that started with speculation that the Bucs would cut Wright after his 2012 performance-enhancing drug suspension wiped out the remaining guaranteed money on his deal.

Seahawks fans want to put message in 49ers bricks

When the 49ers opened a new revenue stream by selling personalized bricks outside Levi’s Stadium, they also opened the door for those who might want to make a statement in the pavement.

Now, a group of Seahawks fans is trying to figure out how to support their team outside the enemy camp.

Ahmad Brooks won’t be charged with assault

After taking their time weighing their options, the Santa Clara County District Attorney has decided not to move forward with assault charges agains 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the D.A.’s office believes there is not enough evidence to feel confident about convicting Brooks of the charge. There was initially a warrant issued in the case, but prosecutors decided more information was needed before it could be served. Per Barrows, the investigation uncovered evidence that would have made getting a conviction more difficult.

NaVorro Bowman gives Kaepernick some friendly hat advice

On Tuesday, 49ers inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman appeared on NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access,” and the topic of Colin Kaepernick’s Miami Dolphins cap was broached.

NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest asked Bowman if he had indicated to Kaepernick that wearing another club’s hat wad disrespectful.

Here’s Bowman’s response, which he delivered with a smile:

Ron Jaworski sees Kaepernick as “special talent” with “elite skill set”

NFL quarterback turned ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is in the process of ranking all of the league’s passers, and he positively gushed in his assessment of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Jaworski ranked Kaepernick at No. 11, noting that he has played only half a season. But Jaworski said that 10 games was more than enough for Kaepernick’s talent to shine.

After criticism, Colin Kaepernick puts on a 49ers hat

Colin Kaepernick has put on a 49ers hat. Perhaps we’re going to have to find something new to talk about during the slowest point of the offseason.

Kaepernick, the 49ers quarterback who raised the ire of fans and commentators by posting a picture of himself on Instagram wearing a Dolphins hat, has now posted a picture of himself on Instagram wearing a 49ers hat, in an attempt to put the issue to rest.

Ron Jaworski, Herm Edwards rip Kaepernick’s hat

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick got some grief from fans last week for wearing a Dolphins hat, and he was defiant in his response. That was probably the wrong tack to take if he wanted to make the issue disappear.

On Monday, Kaepernick was the subject of some fairly harsh criticism on ESPN, where analysts Ron Jaworski and Herm Edwards both said Kaepernick’s decision to wear another team’s gear was unacceptable.

Parys Haralson working his way back after season lost to injury

Parys Haralson missed the entirety of the team’s run to the Super Bowl last season after suffering a torn triceps in the preseason. The injury landed Haralson on injured reserve ending his season before it could get started.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh wished, in retrospect, the team had placed their one injured reserve return designation on Haralson as he would have been able to contribute by season’s end and the 49ers didn’t use the designation on another player.

Okoye, Purcell witnessed Ahmad Brooks’ assault of teammate

For British Olympian Lawrence Okoye, his introduction to American football has included something Okoye likely didn’t expect.

Per multiple reports, Okoye and fellow undrafted rookie Michael Purcell witnessed linebacker Ahmad Brooks repeatedly (allegedly) bash teammate Lamar Divens in the head with a beer bottle on June 8.

Frank Gore thinks Colin Kaepernick can get “a lot better”

Colin Kaepernick was plenty good in his first 10 games as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, but at least one of his teammates thinks we’ve only seen the beginning of what Kaepernick can do.

San Francisco running back Frank Gore said on ESPN that he believes Kaepernick’s work ethic makes it a sure thing that he’ll improve in his first offseason of work running the first-string offense.

Michael Crabtree resumes working out

It has been about six weeks since 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree had surgery to repair a torn Achilles, which is apparently the time he needed to heal up enough to resume working out.

Crabtree sent out a tweet early Monday morning announcing that he’s ready to hit the gym and start the next phase in his rehab.

Lockette has an advantage in the race to replace Crabtree

As the 49ers continue to look for a receiver to step up and replace Michael Crabtree, one candidate has an ace in the hole.

His best friend is the quarterback.

“It’s almost like you go somewhere and you realize someone is your cousin, and since we met we have been inseparable,” Ricardo Lockette tells the Albany Herald.  An Albany native, Lockette was in town to participate in Deion Branch’s annual youth football camp.

Aldon Smith: I’m not punching myself in face over missing sack record

Through the first 13 games of the 2012 season, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was on a pace to challenge the NFL’s single-season sack record.

He 19.5 sacks, leaving him with three to tie Michael Strahan’s mark with three games to play. That didn’t wind up happening as Smith went sackless from that point through the end of the regular season (and playoffs, to boot), but Smith said he isn’t beating himself up over the missed opportunity at a spot in the NFL record book.
