49ers-Chargers game to proceed after earthquake

While the turf may be an issue for Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium, the stuff beneath it won’t keep the game from being played.

In the wake of an earthquake that registered 6.1 on the Richter scale, the 49ers have announced that Sunday’s game against the Chargers will proceed as scheduled.

“Levi’s Stadium was designed to meet California seismic code requirements and seismic bracing was incorporated into the design and construction,” the team said in a statement. “Building engineers have walked the entire stadium and we have had no reported damage. We will continue to do so throughout the day.”

Some train service to and from the stadium will be affected by the earthquake, with an epicenter near Napa.

The so-called Field of Jeans hosted its first NFL game last Sunday. Turf issues during a mid-week practice prompted coach Jim Harbaugh to remove the team from the playing surface. The field has since been re-sodded.
