NaVorro Bowman is apparently faster than ever

When doctors rebuilt the left knee 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman blew out last year in the playoffs, they apparently used some Steve Austin technology.

Because according to 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke, Bowman is faster than ever.

During an appearance on 95.7 The Fan, Baalke said Bowman is progressing well, and is still on target for a return at some point later this season.

“I talked to him the other day in the weight room before I left and he was all excited ‘cause he had gotten to run a full-speed 40 for the first time in a long time and broke the 4.5 range — it was in the 4.5 range,” Baalke said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. “So he was all excited. But he’s coming along very well. When he’s set to return remains to be seen. But progressing well, as is Patrick (Willis).”

Willis is still dealing with a toe injury, and Bowman’s still on the physically unable to perform list, possibly ready to return in late November.

But while you might wonder about the veracity of the timing, Bowman’s never been a 4.5 40 guy.
He ran a 4.70 at the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine, and followed that up with a 4.62 at his pro day workout at Penn State.

While there’s obviously more to his job description than running fast in a straight line, it still serves as a sign of progress for a team that could use some reinforcement for a second-half run.
