Report: A “real possibility” NaVorro Bowman doesn’t play this year

The 49ers have until Tuesday to decide whether to activate linebacker NaVorro Bowman from the physically unable to perform list.

But it might be a moot point.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, a source says there’s a “real possibility” Bowman won’t play again this year after blowing out his knee last season.

There were reports that Bowman still had pain in the knee, but coach Jim Harbaugh said his recent MRI was “fine.” Those two statements aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.

The 49ers can still activate him from reserve/PUP Tuesday and have a three-week window to let him begin practicing. It’s hard to imagine they’ll make a season-ending move unless it’s obvious Bowman has no chance, since they have extra time to allow him to heal.

If he can’t return, he’d join Patrick Willis on the shelf, a brilliant pair of linebackers whose absence will clearly be felt as the 49ers try to make a push for the playoffs.
