The 49ers didn’t have linebacker Aldon Smith at practice today because Smith was in Los Angeles,
dealing with the fallout from an April incident in which he was accused
of making a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport. Coach Jim
Harbaugh wasn’t in the mood to talk about it.
As reporters questioned Harbaugh, he was having none of it. Here’s the transcript:

49ers say they’ll try to extend both Michael Crabtree and Mike Iupati
The 49ers appear willing to do business with those who will do business with them.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said the team wanted to try to extend both guard Mike Iupati and wide receiver Michael Crabtree before they become unrestricted free agents next spring.

LaMichael James likely to miss entire preseason
The good news for 49ers running back LaMichael James
is that he is expected to be ready to go by Week One after suffering a
practice injury on Sunday. The bad news is that the inexperienced James
won’t benefit from any preseason experience.
Jim Harbaugh denies wanting to be paid like Super Bowl-winning coach
It’s a given in league circles that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has yet
to sign a new contract because he wants more money than the 49ers are
willing to pay. Per multiple reports, Harbaugh
wants to be paid like a Super Bowl-winning coach, and the 49ers aren’t
ready to do that until he, you know, wins a Super Bowl.
Earlier this year, Harbaugh denied wanting to be the highest-paid coach in football, without specifically addressing whether he wants to be paid like a coach who has won a Super Bowl. More recently, Harbaugh has gone the rest of the way.

LaMichael James carted off during 49ers practice
Another injury has struck the 49ers’ running back corps, as LaMichael
James got carted off the field with an apparently dislocated left elbow
early in Sunday’s practice.
James could be out a month because of the dislocation, according to the NFL Network.
James had just become a top contender for the No. 2 running back role Friday, once Kendall Hunter sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Kendall Hunter suffers torn ACL
The 49ers appear to have lost one of their top reserve running backs for the season.
Fourth-year pro Kendall Hunter has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the team said Saturday morning. The injury seems likely to end Hunter’s campaign, assuming the standard recovery of close to a year for an ACL tear.

Frank Gore not ready to give up heavy workload
The 49ers have accumulated quite a bit of depth behind running back Frank Gore
over the last few years, leading some to wonder if 2014 will be the
year when the longtime workhorse starts to cede more of the workload to
other backs.
If it is up to Gore, the wait will last a little longer. Kendall Hunter, Marcus Lattimore, Carlos Hyde and LaMichael James are all on the roster and looking for playing time, but Gore has no plans on stepping aside so someone else can do the heavy lifting.

Aldon Smith says he’s remained sober, expects to meet with Goodell soon
With word of Ravens running back Ray Rice’s
two-game suspension being announced on Thursday, we may be drawing
closer to learning what kind of discipline the league has in store for
49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.
Smith pleaded no contest to three weapons charges and a DUI this offseason and reports were that he’d meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell soon to discuss his situation. On Thursday, Smith confirmed, via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, that he expects to have a meeting with Goodell soon but that no date has been set yet.

Alex Boone will hold out from 49ers camp
Vernon Davis reported to 49ers training camp. Teammate Alex Boone will not.
Boone is holding out from 49ers camp, as expected. The 27-year-old Boone has two years left on his contract, with base salaries of $2 million in 2014 and $1.2 million in 2015, and he believes he deserves significantly more than that.

Vernon Davis reports to camp, still wants a new deal
After skipping the offseason program, losing a $200,00 workout bonus
and subjecting himself to up to $70,000 in fines for skipping a
mandatory minicamp, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis decided to stop the financial bleeding by showing up for training camp.
Per a league source, his decision to show up for training camp was influenced by multiple factors, including but not limited to $30,000 per day in fines and, after five days, partial signing bonus forfeiture.

Aldon Smith gets 12 days in jail on DUI charge
49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has not avoided jail time. But he has gotten the closest thing possible to no jail time.
According to Tracy Kaplan of the San Jose Mercury News, a judge has sentenced 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith to 12 days in jail on gun and DUI charges. He gets credit for one day served, and he’ll serve the remaining 11 by participating in a work crew on Mondays, starting July 28.

Jimmie Ward healthy and ready to go for camp
The 49ers placed eight players on either the PUP or NFI lists on
Thursday, which leaves them ineligible to practice with the team until
the Niners remove those designations.
Safety Jimmie Ward was not placed on either list, however, and that means the 2014 first-round pick’s foot has healed enough for him to take the field when the team opens camp on Thursday. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that is the plan, leaving Ward set for his first practice time with the team since he was selected in May.

Marcus Lattimore placed on non-football injury list
49ers second-year tailback Marcus Lattimore was among six players placed on the club’s non-football injury list on Thursday, according to the NFL’s official transactions.
Lattimore missed the 2013 season after suffering multiple torn knee ligaments in October 2012, including his ACL. He participated in workouts this spring for San Francisco.

49ers extend Joe Staley through 2019
The 49ers may start training camp without guard Alex Boone
because they haven’t given him the new contract he desires, but it’s
not because they are opposed to contract extensions in general.
In fact, they announced one for another member of the offensive line on Thursday. The team announced that they have reached agreement with left tackle Joe Staley on a two-year extension that will keep him in San Francisco through the 2019 season.

Crabtree on Sherman: I don’t talk, I concentrate on football
Michael Crabtree will not engage with Richard Sherman until their teams meet on the field.
Crabtree, the 49ers wide receiver who has a long history with Sherman, declined to get into it when he was asked this week about Sherman’s recent comments about his personal animosity toward Crabtree. Instead, Crabtree said he would rather focus on preparing to face Sherman on the field.

Richard Sherman still running his mouth about Michael Crabtree
Perhaps when Richard Sherman’s finished playing football, he can transition into pro wrestling.
Because the Seahawks cornerback has a knack for keeping a feud alive by making inflammatory remarks into a microphone.

Donte Whitner questions if players really vote for NFLN Top 100
NFL Network is in the process of unveiling its annual Top 100, as voted on by other players. Donte Whitner did not make the cut, and as a result, he thinks there’s something fishy about the voting process.
Whitner, the safety who moved from the 49ers to the Browns in free agency this year, took to Twitter on Thursday night and accused NFL Network of “lies” for saying that players vote on the Top 100.

No charges against Aldon Smith for bomb threat
Aldon Smith might have plenty of problems (perhaps even 99), but a bomb threat’s not one.
According to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com, the 49ers outside linebacker won’t face charges from the fake bomb threat case.
