The 49ers are kicking the tires on Ben Tate this week and it appears that Reggie Bush’s torn ACL and the stress fracture in Carlos Hyde’s foot aren’t the only reasons why they’re in the market for running back help.

Jim Tomsula says he’s “evaluating everyone” including Colin Kaepernick

Kaepernick Says He's No Longer "being asked to do things outside of my character"

Colin Kaepernick was asked about a comment made by coach Jim Tomsula, who said that Kaepernick isn’t being asked to do anything he has been asked to do in previous years. His response eluded to the previous regime asking him to do things outside of his natural instinct.

Here is the transcript via the Santa Rosa Press Democrat:

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks and former 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald have been indicted in a sexual assault case.

McDonald faces one count of rape and Brooks faces one count of misdemeanor sexual battery, the San Jose Mercury News reports. McDonald could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison if convicted, while Brooks could face up to six months in jail.

The men were both accused by the same woman in an incident that took place at McDonald’s house in December. She says that McDonald raped her and that Brooks groped her after she fell and hit her head near McDonald’s pool.

Jerome Simpson suspended six games

49ers Release First Depth Chart Of The Season

The 49ers released their first depth chart of the season on Wednesday. Coach Tomsula told that this depth chart is fluid and not set in stone.
“We will shift that around and those depth charts in no way, I should say now, mean anything in terms of something being solid and staying. You will see those be manipulated throughout the course of the preseason.”
Here's a look at how it stands as of today.

49ers cut Aldon Smith

Aldon Smith has used up his last chance.

Smith, the talented but troubled 49ers pass rusher who was arrested overnight for DUI, has been released.

There was little doubt that had to happen: The 49ers have given second and third chances to Smith and he has repeatedly made them regret it, and at some point they simply had to say enough is enough.

Aldon Smith arrested for DUI, hit and run and vandalism | Claims there was no DUI

News broke that 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested on Friday morning, but there weren’t any details about what led him to Santa Clara County Jail.

The Santa Clara Police Department has now offered up those details. They announced via Twitter that Smith was arrested for hit and run, DUI and vandalism on Thursday night. No further information about the incident that led to the arrest was released, but a press release is expected later this morning.

49ers will “work hard” to retain Aldon Smith

The big story of the 49ers offseason was the steady stream of departures from the team.

General Manager Trent Baalke would like to generate a different headline with linebacker Aldon Smith, who is in the final year of his contract. Baalke said that the team is going to “work hard to make sure” that Smith remains with the team and indicated that the team feels Smith has moved in the right direction after off-field issues led him to miss 14 games over the last two seasons.

Geep Chryst: Kaepernick didn’t regress as much as perceived

The 49ers failed to advance to the playoffs last season, ending a three-year string of making it at least as far as the NFC title game and touching off an offseason of sweeping change.

One thing that didn’t change was the identity of the starting quarterback. Colin Kaepernick will run the offense again this season after a 2014 season that left many people feeling like he’d regressed in his third year at the helm. His offensive coordinator Geep Chryst isn’t one of those people. He cited other factors for creating a perception that Kaepernick was moving in the wrong direction.

Vernon Davis: “Game planning” to blame for low 2014 production

49ers tight end Vernon Davis didn’t have the kind of production we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him during the 2014 season.

Davis averaged nearly 50 catches a season during his first eight NFL seasons, but caught just 26 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns last season. That led to some musing about the team parting ways with Davis in order to save money under the cap, but they’ve held onto him in a decision that lends some support to Davis’s belief that last year’s issue  was with how the offense was run in general and not with him specifically.

Anthony Davis retires at age 25, will pay back unearned signing bonus money

The 49ers have once again lost a player to a surprise retirement.

Anthony Davis, a 25-year-old offensive tackle who was the 11th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, said in a statement that he is retiring from football.

49ers First Round Draft Pick Arik Armstead says criticism of his effort is misguided

The 49ers liked defensive end Arik Armstead enough to make him the 17th overall pick in the draft, but there were some who were less impressed by Armstead heading into the draft.

Several draft pundits criticized Armstead for giving inconsistent effort while at Oregon, which suggested that the 6-7 former basketball player wasn’t willing to work hard enough to succeed on the football field. Armstead believes the label is an incorrect one, suggesting that those offering their opinion were expecting him to make plays as an individual that weren’t what the team asked him to do.

Reggie Bush wants to return punts this year

Early in Reggie Bush’s NFL career, he returned punts in addition to his offensive duties and he showed a knack for it while returning four punts for touchdowns in his first three seasons with the Saints.

Bush continued returning punts through the end of his tenure in New Orleans, but six 2011 opportunities with the Dolphins are the last time he’s been seen in that role. Bush signed with the 49ers this offseason and he may get a chance to turn back the clock. Bush was fielding punts at Thursday’s practice and said it was his idea to get back on special teams.

Rookie RB Mike Davis says Kaepernick owes him a new thumb

After working with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Kurt Warner said he was impressed with the touch he was able to put on passes.

He might want to run that by 49ers running back Mike Davis, who said on Twitter that Kaepernick “owe me a new thumb” after one pass in OTAs this week.

49ers sign Philip Wheeler, release Trindon Holliday

The 49ers have added another linebacker to their roster just ahead of the first round of the draft.

The team announced Thursday afternoon that they have signed linebacker Philip Wheeler, who became a free agent earlier in the offseason when the Dolphins released him. Wheeler, who was a third-round pick of the Colts back in 2008, visited with the team in late April and joins Desmond Bishop and Nick Bellore as veteran additions to a group that lost Patrick Willis and Chris Borland to retirement.

Darnell Dockett not rushing return from torn ACL

Darnell Dockett has spent the last 10 years trying to beat the 49ers, so it’s not too surprising that there was some culture shock involved with joining the team this offseason after he was released by the Cardinals.

The defensive end said that he and left tackle Joe Staley walked past each other four times before they actually spoke to one another, shook hands “and kind of put [past battles] behind us.” Relationships with new teammates and past adversaries aren’t the only things taking some time for Dockett this offseason.

NaVorro Bowman “feels great” after return to practice

Like the other teams that changed coaches this offseason, the 49ers are holding a three-day voluntary minicamp for their veteran players before the draft and that’s given them an opportunity to get linebacker Navorro Bowman back on the field for the first time in a long time.

Bowman missed all of last season after tearing knee ligaments in the 49ers’ NFC Championship game loss to the Seahawks after the 2013 season and was never able to practice during a brief spell off of the physically unable to perform list late in the year. Bowman has been participating in this week’s work, however, and he said Wednesday that all is going well in his return to the field.

49ers to introduce first-ever alternate uniforms

Thursday’s 49ers draft party won’t simply celebrate the newest member of the team.  It’ll also include a look at the team’s first-ever alternate uniforms.

The 49ers will be unveiling the new alternate jersey, the first change to the team’s uniform since 2009.

Jim Tomsula: We have prepared for Justin Smith’s retirement

49ers safety Eric Reid said this week that he and some of his teammates have been trying to convince defensive end Justin Smith to return for another season with the team, but the 49ers are giving the veteran a bit more space while he contemplates his future.

Head coach Jim Tomsula said Friday that the team will give Smith all “the time that he needs” to make up his mind and that he doesn’t doubt that he’ll let the 49ers know as soon as he’s reached that decision. Tomsula also said that Smith’s timing wouldn’t impact the team because they have been well aware that Smith’s nearing the end of the line.

Kaepernick calls ex-rugby player Jarryd Hayne “phenomenal”

Former rugby player Jarryd Hayne, who signed with the 49ers last month despite having never played American football, has been working out with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. And Kaepernick likes what he sees.

“Phenomenal athlete. Just a natural,” Kaepernick told the Sacramento Bee. “Since the day I met him, since every workout he’s been at, he’s going to give you everything he has. And it doesn’t seem like there’s going to be much of a learning curve for him.”

NaVorro Bowman expected to be on field at April minicamp

Teams with new head coaches get to hold a minicamp for veteran players before the draft, which means the 49ers will be gathering for three days of on-field work later this month.

They expect to have linebacker Navorro Bowman taking part in the workouts when that minicamp gets underway. Bowman missed all of last season after suffering torn knee ligaments in the NFC Championship game loss to the Seahawks, but coach Jim Tomsula said Friday that the plan is for Bowman to be out there for some portion of the workout.

Hakeem Nicks visiting with the 49ers

Most of the players on the list of the top free agents this offseason have found homes for 2015, leaving just a handful without jobs as March comes to an end.

One member of that list is wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who has been greeted by an indifferent reaction from the league coming off a 38-catch season with the Colts in 2014. Things may be looking up for Nicks, however.

Lance Briggs to visit the 49ers on Monday

With a big hole to fill at inside linebacker, the 49ers identified Mason Foster and Lance Briggs as two potential targets in free agency this week. Foster signed with the Bears instead, but Briggs is heading to San Francisco for a visit.

Briggs told Vaughn McClure of that he will visit with the 49ers on Monday. Briggs is from the area and grew up a 49ers fan.

Report: 49ers interested in free agent LB Erin Henderson

Free agent linebacker Erin Henderson was out of the league last season. He was busted for drunk driving twice in one year from January 2013 to January 2014 and released by the Vikings in February of 2014 before being slapped with a four-game suspension at the start of last season.

Henderson worked out for the Chiefs after the season but wasn’t signed to a contract. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports the soon-to-be 29-year-old held a private workout for teams in Arizona on Sunday.

Justin Smith: Decision on retirement is “not 100 percent”

FB Bruce Miller arrested for spousal battery

According to multiple reports, 49ers fullback Bruce Miller was arrested last Thursday in Santa Clara on charges of spousal abuse.

Patrick Willis and Justin Smith(UPDATE: ??) retiring from 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers continue to see dramatic changes in a franchise only a year removed from three straight NFC title game appearances.

From coach Jim Harbaugh leaving (mutually or otherwise) to running back Frank Gore signing with the Eagles on Tuesday  to the expected departure of receiver Michael Crabtree to the possible loss of guard Mike Iupati, the exodus of talented players continue.

The next two dominoes to fall will be linebacker Patrick Willis and defensive lineman Justin Smith.

49ers would have cut Aldon Smith if he hadn’t taken revised deal

So why did 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith swap out a potentially fully-guaranteed $9.754 million salary in 2015 for a package of non-guaranteed roster bonuses and other payments that total a maximum of $9.754 million?

The simple answer is that’s the best deal he was going to get, anywhere.

Smith’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, told Matt Maiocco of earlier this week that the 49ers didn’t say, ‘”If you don’t do this, you’re cut.'”  The 49ers apparently didn’t need to verbalize their intentions.

Veteran defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has signed a two-year deal with the 49ers, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Dockett, who was drafted by the Cardinals in 2004 and spent 11 years there, was cut last week when the two sides couldn’t agree on the value of a veteran defensive lineman recovering from ACL repair.
The Cardinals, who reportedly offered a deal with a base value of $2.5 million and a maximum of $4 million, had hoped to be able to bring him back after he tested the market.

According to Rosenhaus, Dockett’s contract in San Francisco has a value of $7.5 million over two years.  He’s due to make $4 million in 2015, with half of that guaranteed.
