Anquan Boldin, Colin Kaepernick excited about Geep Chryst as offensive coordinator

The 49ers announced their 20-member coaching staff on Monday, a group that includes a pair of position coaches at wide receiver and linebacker under new head coach Jim Tomsula.

It seems like a safe bet that the assistant that gets the most attention of that group is going to be offensive coordinator Geep Chryst. After a year that saw the 49ers offense and quarterback Colin Kaepernick take some big backward steps with Chryst serving as quarterbacks coach, Chryst will be charged with getting everything back on line in 2015. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin is optimistic that he can do it.

“He was actually my quarterbacks coach in Arizona my rookie year. He’s a great football mind, and I think he can bring a spark to the offense,” Boldin said, via the team’s website.

Kaepernick is “very excited” about Chryst making the move to coordinator, noting that he’s open to “taking shots” downfield. With CEO Jed York talking about Kaepernick running the ball more, we’re not sure how often those shots are going to come. Questions about the offense extend to the impending free agency of running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Michael Crabtree as well as the mystery of tight end Vernon Davis'€™s sharp decline in 2014.

It adds up to a lot on Chryst’s plate heading into the season and his ability to handle it all will do a lot to determine the team’s fate in Tomsula’s first full season as the head coach.
