Steve Young: 49ers have Super Bowl roster, not sure about the coaches
Steve Young was the quarterback the last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl. He thinks the players are in place for the 49ers to win another Super Bowl.
As for the coaches? Well, Young isn't sure about that.
Young told Comcast SportsNet that the 49ers have all the players in place to win their first championship since Young himself hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy 20 years ago.
“They have a great roster. They have a Super Bowl roster,” Young said. “They have the guys to go do it. I think the expectation needs to be that they can go get one.”
But as for the 49ers' decision to get rid of coach Jim Harbaugh (and most of his staff) and replace him with Jim Tomsula? Young doesn't sound too enthused about that.
"I just don’t know them. I don’t know Jim. I can’t really comment because I don’t know them,” Young said. “We don’t know their history. They are about to write their history and I guess in some ways that’s good. We’re just gonna get behind Jim and wish for the best. It’s a high-risk situation when you turn over your whole staff but we’ll hope for the best.”
Harbaugh was an undeniably good coach, and yet 49ers owner Jed York and General Manager Trent Baalke decided to replace him with the totally unproven Tomsula. There’s a lot of pressure on Tomsula, and Young is like most 49ers fans in not being sure if this is going to work.
